GEORGE TOWN, Dec 30 — The Pakatan Harapan (PH) state government had 12 years to prepare a dossier on Penang's hawker culture for submission to Unesco but it failed to do so, said Penang Gerakan's H'ng Chee Wey. The Penang Gerakan secretary said the previous state government, under Barisan Nasional (BN) with Gerakan at its helm, took 10 years to prepare a one-metre thick dossier on George Town for submission to Unesco.
PUTRAJAYA, Dec 16 — A Malaysian woman who was born to a Muslim man and a Buddhist woman was never a Muslim to begin with as the parents were not married and as she was an illegitimate child, and the declaration of her religious status as a non-Muslim should be made by the civil courts instead of the Shariah courts, the Federal Court heard today.

MELAKA, Dec 28 — The challenges to eliminate the Covid-19 pandemic did not hamper efforts to empower the public sector which is one of the government’s main agenda to ensure efficient, transparent and people-friendly service system, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The Prime Minister said the responsibility of civil servants now is to make the new norm a culture so that public service will be effectively delivered to the target group while increasing their productivity.
PETALING JAYA, Dec 29 — Malaysian scientist Dr Ng Kwan Hoong can add another feather to his cap after winning the prestigious Merdeka Award 2020 for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement. Dr Ng, a senior professor at the University of Malaya’s (UM) Faculty of Medicine, is best known for his research in predicting breast cancer risk by measuring breast density in patients.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 — Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced today that five more states will come under the movement control order (MCO) from January 22, effectively locking down the whole country except Sarawak.
BEIJING, Jan 4 — Thousands of people were lining up in Beijing to receive a Covid-19 vaccine as China races to innoculate millions before the Chinese New Year mass travel season in February. More than 73,000 people in the Chinese capital have received the first dose of the vaccine over the last couple of days, state media reported yesterday, including community workers and bus drivers.
GEORGE TOWN, Jan 6 — With the pandemic showing no signs of abating, the Penang government is hoping factories in the state will allow the authorities to use their compounds to set up quarantine centres for low-risk Covid-19 patients. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said factories that have larger grounds and suitable facilities could set up the quarantine areas to house their workers diagnosed as Covid positive but did not have severe symptoms of the virus to reduce the burden on the existing centres for low-risk patients.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — A majority of businesses, eateries, and shops will be allowed to operate from 6am to 8pm daily under the latest implementation of the movement control order (MCO), Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced today. The senior minister explained that businesses subject to the 14-hour window during the MCO are restaurants and eateries, food trucks, roadside and mobile vendors and food kiosks, food courts and hawker centres, including sundry and convenience shops.
PETALING JAYA, Jan 13 ― The announcement of the second movement control order (MCO) left many Malaysians scrambling to get their affairs in order or just a last dine-in before the two-week restrictions are put in place. Roads and highways in several states reported bumper to bumper traffic as many people hit the road for one last night before the stroke of midnight.
